Husband and I are planning to make a small bedroom into a home gym. We are planning on purchasing a new, nice treadmill and then a few years from now get a used elliptical trainer. Husband sees it as an economical move. I see it as a family friendly move. We have been members of our YMCA for over 3 years now and are regular gym-goers. Our membership is $50 a month. We're planning on saving for a good down payment then use our membership money to pay off the treadmill. I think that having a home gym in our home will be the difference between getting in our workout and not once we have children. It will also set a good example to our kids about being active and healthy.
So here's the survey:
- Do you have a home gym?
- What equipment do you have? Do you like it? Where did you purchase it at?
- What equipment do you wish you had?
- How often do you use it?
- Is your commitment greater, lesser or equal to when you worked out at a gym?
- What color are the walls in your home gym? Or what color do you suggest? I'm planning on painting that room in the next month or so.

I wish I had a better home gym. We just don't have the room in our tiny apartment. I would LOVE a treadmill and an elliptical though.
As far as painting a workout room, I would think maybe something calming like a blue or green would be good. Anything too bright would make me feel anxious I think.
Good luck!
I don't have room for a home gym. But, if I did, I'd put an elliptical in, a good set of weights and a tv (to watch while on elliptical)and dvd player for workout dvd's. Hubs would like a recumbent bike. As for color, I prefer neutral's with a gold undertone, but that's just me- that's how every room in my house is!
We do have a home gym, pics in my blog. We have a vision fitness treadmill, a vision fitness stationary bike, a bowflex (I forget which model), roman chair, balance ball, BOSU, free weights. We use the gym basically every day. Greater because I can wear mismatched items, I don't have to drive anywhere, etc. Our wall color is grey, although I will be repainting it to make it more grey. Right now it has a purple tinge that I don't like. We will eventually get a second treadmill so we can run at the same time and then the Bowfelx will have to move to the basement.

I used to have a spin bike, but I sold it because I never used it. I have a step, a set of barbell weights, a medicine, jump rope...my husband has a kickbox bag thingy and an iron gym. We use none of it, although I could never part with the step or barbell weights. I think I'm just one of those people who have to go to the gym to be motivated to workout. I would love to have a treadmill at home so I could watch TV and walk, but my track record isn't that great, huh? Lesley Lifting Life posted a video tour of her home gym a week or 2 ago and it was really neat.
I think what you and your husband are doing is an AWESOME move. Honestly, it's one my husband and I should make. We also are members of the local YMCA, for $60 a month, and I am honestly worried about how fitness will fit into both of our lives once we have children.
Kudos to you for planning ahead!
Right now, we don't really have an at-home gym. We have a weight bench (flat) and free weights (dumbbells) ranging from 5 lbs to 30 pounds...I also have a yoga mat and several DVDs, but that's it!
For me, I'd have two types of cardio (treadmill and either elliptical or stationary bike), a flat and incline bench (could probably be one bench with settings), and free weight dummbells from 5 lbs to 80 pounds or so. That would be my minimum I think.
I am currently in the works of setting my home gym up. We just purchased a treadmill that won't be coming until Saturday. So we will have the treadmill, Bowflex, free weights and all the workout equipment extras. I just painted the room last night a tan with gold undertones (Raffia Ribbon by Behr Premium). It's a pretty color in my drabby basement den. I'm going to be blowing up some pictures from when we were in Hawaii for some inspiration and of course we have a TV down there too. I can't wait to start setting up my routine in my new home gym, very worth it IMO :)
What a great idea! I will say the ONE thing I wish I had was a treadmill. Even though I can't run, walking on an incline is a GREAT workout - and the TV is the best distraction!
For some of my friends (who are stay at home moms and have gyms), it can go either way. Some utilize their at-home gym religiously, and others end up giving away their equipment. I think the fact that your husband is committed, too, will definitely make it easier!
I love the idea of using your gym membership money to pay off the equipment! Such a good plan...your husband really is the budgeting king!
