Impressing 7 Year Olds, Ethnic Meatless, Teach Me Strength Training

I promise, promise, promise not to talk about school too much but really it is a big portion of my day --- 7.5 hours. Today during writing time I was talking about different parts of my weekend because they are things that I could write about. I was trying to show them they can write about the little moments of their weekend. I mentioned that I ran 4 miles on Sunday and how that would be a great story. Their faces boosted my ego! At least one student said "Wow! You ran 4 miles!" They have to do a mile run a few times a year for the Presidential Fitness test so they have an understanding of that length. I know they're 7 but it still felt good to get such positive feedback, even if it comes from some knee-biters. :)

Tonight was another Meatless Monday. I find it so much easier to make meatless meals if they are ethnic in nature. We have had meatless enchiladas, meatless fajitas, meatless stuffed peppers, meatless quesadillas, meatless lasagna, meatless spaghetti, etc. Tonight was meatless tacos. I think next week I'm going to pick a non-Mexican, non-Italian meal. Perhaps meatless Japanese or Chinese. Some other ideas that I have are casseroles but those seem so heavy in cream sauce or cheese. Do you have any healthy, meatless "American" meal ideas? I find that most of the "American" meals that I can think of have meat at the heart of the dish. Interesting observation about our culture, I know.

I have a big weakness in my fitness regimen. I do not nearly do enough strength training. Even when I plan for it I sometimes completely skip it. How do you get yourself to do it? Do you enjoy it? Teach me what I should know about it. My knowledge is somewhat spotty. The most strength training that I've ever done is when doing the 30DS. I'm wondering if I should do that again in the mornings like I did back in the spring (when I was looking much more toned). Please give me advice and tips. I don't really want to lose more weight but would like to be more toned. Am I doing thing to really achieve this goal? Sadly and lazily, NO.

Today's EATS
B: 1 cup cereal, cut strawberries, 1/4 cup ff plain yogurt
S: 14 almonds, orange
L: broccoli salad, Greek yogurt, Dove bar
S: Cliff's Kids Z Bar
E: None :(
S: Crazy emotional eating due to stress that caused me not to workout (very cyclical)
D: meatless taco with blackbeans, corn, lettuce, tomatoes, sprinkle of cheese, sour cream and salsa on a flatout wrap

That's what I love about kids. They have a way of reminding us of how big our accomplishments actually are. :)

I wish I could help you with the strength training, but in all honesty...I'm not very good about it either! I do yoga once a week, and I try (key word: *try*) to make strength training happen 2 times a week.

My biggest part is just getting motivated to start, and once I do, I'm good to go. Usually having something cute to wear (even if I'm just going to my living room! ;) ), and listening to some favorite tunes gets me going. But it takes some serious motivation for sure...can't wait to hear what others have to say! :-)

When I ate cheese, I loved grilled cheese with tomato soup.

Ugh. I am certainly no one to give advice on strength training. I hate it!

I remember the mile run from elementary school like it was yesterday. I used to be the only one who actually looked forward to it :)

That's funny about American food. The only meatless American meal I can think of is mac and cheese!

I don't mind doing arm strength training. I use hand weights and can read blogs in between or during sets. Abs, on the other hand, I have a lot of trouble getting motivated for.

You could buy those resistance bands to use at home for your strength training...and how about veggie burgers for an american meal?

Cute students! I love strength training, however I just don't have enough time to go tot he gym and workout. I have a routine that takes me about an hour. However, there are several exercises that you can do at home.

Wow, there's a lot to comment on in this post. I'm going to start from the bottom & work my way up.

Strength training: I use the split routine. I do Chest/Triceps on Monday, Back/Biceps on Tues, Shoulders/Abs on Weds, and Legs on Thurs. And that's it! I do it at the gym and I do it before my cardio. That way I can't skip it. I just have to lift weights first, that's the rule. ;) It works well for me because it's not overwhelming or too fatiguing. And I definitely see results. Oh, I do my reps in sets of 12/10/8 and I increase the weight I lift with each set. HTH!

Okay for a meatless meal, what if you tried something with tofu? Like a thai dish or something? I had a really delicious meal called Swimming Rama once and it was served with fried tofu. Maybe frying it isn't the healthiest way to serve it, but it sure made the tofu taste good!

And as for the running... 4 miles is awesome. And it's cool that your students recognize that too! :)

Ah the old runner's lamenting about strength training post. I think we all have one! LOL!

I am only really strength training b/c of my ankle injury.

I would try some pilates and core work. Just throwing in pushups and sit ups is good too.

I need some 7 year old love too! Tell them you have a friend who ran 4.5 miles.

This is Italian, not American, but one of my favorite meatless dishes is pasta primavera. Giada deLaurentiis has a really good one I think you can find on food network.com. It's basically just tons of veggies, roasted in olive oil and herbs and served over pasta! It's sooo good!

Ugh I suck at getting strength in too! I don't know why it's so darn hard, but it is. I love working with kids! They have a special way of uplifting you and making you feel better about yourself. Well, most of the time!

I would have felt great impressing 7 year olds too - nothing wrong with that!

I can't get myself to do strength either. I was better at it when I wasn't running so much. Maybe try something you haven't done or take a class somewhere.
